What Is Double Needle Punched Geotextile? (And Why It Matters)

If you have shopped for filter fabric, you have probably seen "needle punched" and "double needle punched." Contractors ask for double punched for a reason. Here is what it means and why all of Super Geotextile's non woven fabric is made that way.

How non woven geotextile is made

Non woven geotextile starts as a loose web of polypropylene fibers. To turn that web into a strong fabric, it runs through a needle loom: thousands of barbed needles punch up and down through the web, tangling the fibers together. The more thoroughly the fibers are locked together, the stronger and more consistent the fabric.

Single vs double needle punched

Double needle punched fabric goes through the needling process twice, typically from both sides. Compared with fabric that is only punched once, that generally gives you:

  • Better fiber lock-in. Fibers are tangled from both faces, so the fabric holds together better when it is stretched or loaded with rock.
  • More even thickness. Fewer thin spots means more consistent filtration across the whole roll.
  • Better puncture and tear resistance for the weight, which matters under sharp stone.
  • Less fuzzing and pilling when you handle, cut and drag it into place.

Needle punched vs spunbond

Spunbond non wovens are made by bonding fibers with heat instead of needling. They are thin and stiff, they do not stretch much, and they can tear when rock is dropped on them. Needle punched fabric is thicker and more flexible, so it can conform to the ground and take a load. For drainage, erosion control and under riprap, needle punched is the better choice.
